There are some good lists out there of Wordpress sites, including those that focus on sites that would work well for small businesses.

As already espoused on these pages, I’m a huge advocate of the use of Wordpress for small business websites. It’s no longer just a blog publishing platform; it’s a platform for building your entire site that will give you increased visibility within the search engines and complete control over your site from the day it goes live.

Not every Wordpress theme is fit for this purpose, however. You don’t suddenly want your website to suddenly look like a blog. But there’s a happy medium to be struck and, in my view, the list below are the best Wordpress business themes out there at the moment.

1. VibrantCMS

Why it’s good: The design is clear and there’s a nifty Flash-enabled scroller built into the home page, giving users quick access to the most useful information they are likely to need. The 19 available styles means it’s unlikely you won’t find one to suit your business (caramel is my favourite).

2. Thesis

Why it’s good: Beautifully simple site with a classic, New York Times feel. Particularly like the rotating image feature on the home page. Great for businesses who want a prominent news section and indeed have lots of news to talk about - and thus much scope for ultra-optimized pages. Work work particularly well for freelancers, this one.

3. Titanium

Why it’s good: Visually impressive, with a revolving home page image and space to embed a video introducing on the right-hand side. Even with all that, you’ve got room for a couple of paragraphs of copy about your company.

4. Revolution

Why it’s good. Simple but effective, and would work well for those who want a straightforward brochure-style online presence.

5 The Unstandard

Why it’s good: Perhaps the most design-conscious and least templatey of the themes on this list. The home page would work well as a prominent portfolio page, or simply to promote company products.

6 WP Remix

Why it’s good: You can do a lot with this theme, making it extremely flexible for the small business.

7 Blue Business

Why it’s good: It’s just so simple. You won’t wow anyone, but this site will do the job for small businesses.

8 Influx

Why it’s good: This looks terrific. Text-heavy, but if you’ve got lots to say in your business, you couldn’t really find a better design. Moreover, each of the four alternative skins are all very different and could appeal to a wide range of businesses. Definitely one of my favourite themes.
