Does Twitter Really Work for Small Businesses?

October 31, 2008

I’m still unconvinced by Twitter.

I’ve given it a go but just can’t seem to get excited by it. To me there’s too much information going on and the distraction involved is not worth it. It may have something to do with the circles you move in - fewer than five people in my Yahoo email contacts book have an account - but even if my 50 best mates were furious Twitters, I couldn’t imagine having the time or energy to follow everything they were up to.

I’m interested though it’s its potential benefit for clients, particularly small businesses. I therefore read  this post and video with interest, but even then I thought the kind of businesses that could use Twitter profitably were of the much bigger variety.

Perhaps I can see the virtue in including it as a small part of a company’s online marketing jigsaw, but to expect big things from Twitter is unrealistic to my mind. I’m a sceptic to say the least.

  1. It’s interesting to me that at the time you posted this you had only Twittered three times. How can you say “I’ve given it a go”? It’s like looking at a swimming pool and saying “I don’t really see any use for swimming” without ever having jumped in, done a few underwater flips, learned to swim, gone to a meet, talked to other swimmers, or watched the olympics. And sometimes, knowing how to swim can keep you safe as well…

Don’t get me wrong, Twitter isn’t for everyone, and not everyone who uses it wants to leverage it for business. But there are lots of people out there who have taken the time on Twitter to listen and learn, build and add value to a community, and reap the benefits. Like most things, it isn’t an instant thing, but takes time to build.

I’m going to go follow you today, and I would love to see some of the things you have to offer. Experience, links, observations, favorite blogs, etc. And I will do my best to offer you something of value as well.

Give it a go! And welcome!

  2. You know you’re absolutely right Lisa. I made the classic mistake, as you say, of opining about something I hadn’t given a proper go to. To be honest, it was unclear to me how you actually got ‘into’ Twitter… now I’ve realised you can isolate your niche and common interests through sites such as Twitterpacks, it’s becoming rapidly clear to me why it really could be of benefit.

I can feel a contrite post coming on!

    Thanks for your comments.

  3. [...] If you’d told me I would be writing this post a week ago, I would have laughed in your face. In fact, not just laughed: I would have up rolled up my sleeves, thrown back my head, gripped something solid nearby and launched into the most gargantuan, belly-propelling and unsociable chortle you’d ever have the misfortune to be in the same room as. If you don’t believe me, read my recent post. [...]
